Herpes zoster involving maxillary and mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve in HIV patient: A case report. J Int Oral Health 2016;8(4):1-4. Abstract: Herpes zoster (HZ) or shingles consist of a reactivation of the Varicella Zoster virus that had entered cutaneous nerve endings through an earlier occurrence of chicken pox, passes to the dorsal root ganglia and resides there in a latent form. Nerves usually involved are C3, T5, L1, L2, and the fi rst division of trigeminal nerve. The characteristic appearance of this condition is occurrence of multiple, unilateral, painful vesicles, and ulceration involving a single dermatome. The infection commonly aff ects elderly individuals, however if present in the younger age group, raises the suspicion of immunocompromised status such as acquired immuno defi ciency syndrome (AIDS)/human immunodefi ciency virus. In this case report, we present a patient with AIDS who developed HZ of the left side involving the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the trigeminal nerve. The patient presented with unilateral crustations involving the left side of lower and middle one-third of the face along the tract of the trigeminal nerve, intra-orally involving buccal and labial mucosa ipsilaterally.

Mandibular osteonecrosis following herpes zoster infection in the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve: a case report and literature review

Herpes zoster virus (HZV) infections are caused by reactivation of the varicella zoster virus. Reactivation symptoms commonly affect the thoracolumbar trunk, and rarely affect the mandibular branches of the trigeminal nerve. When the mandibular branches are involved, lesions appear proximal to the innervation area. This condition may be associated with exfoliation of the teeth and osteonecrosis...

We report here rare case of a RHS affecting a middle-aged individual, in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive patient. The patient presented with sev...

Herpes Zoster Induced Alveolar Bone Necrosis in Immunocompromised Patients; Two Case Reports

Introduction: Herpes zoster Infection (HZI) is a viral disease with painful skin rashes and blisters in a limited area on one side of the body, often in a strip. Osteonecrosis with spontaneous exfoliation of teeth in association with HZI of the mandibular nerve is a rare phenomenon. In this report, such an unusual complication of HZI is presented.   Case Report: The clinical course of a 53-year...

Case Study HERPES ZOSTER OF RIGHT MAXILLARY DIVISION OF TRIGEMINAL NERVE ALONG WITH ORAL MANIFESTATIONS IN A 46 YEAR OLD MALE

Herpes zoster in the distribution of the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the trigeminal nerve is characterized by painful vesicular eruptions of the skin and oral mucosa in the distribution of the affected nerves. Oral complications may occur, including post-herpetic neuralgia, devitalisation of teeth, and abnormal development of permanent teeth, root resorption and periapical lesions. Th...

Herpes zoster mandibularis.

A case of Herpes zoster of the mandibular nerve in an 80 year old man is reported. Herpes zoster infection affecting only the mandibular branch of the trigeminal nerve is rare. It is proposed that the distribution of lesions is a consequence of a unique latent site of the virus within neurons of the gasserian ganglion innervating the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve.
